WHICH TIE SHOULD I WEAR?

A MODERN GUIDE TO PLAIN, PATTERNED, AND TEXTURED TIES

We keep hearing that the world is becoming more informal. With the rise of Business Casual as the dress code of many offices, the necktie becomes a non-compulsory accessory. They are, however, re-emerging as a key item to add an individual touch to your look. With a new role, ties are more of -the-moment than ever; and there are countless ways to sport them in style.Charles Tyrwhitt looks at today’s tie in this failsafe guide for style, occasions, and dress code.

THE PLAIN-COLOUR TIE: INESCAPABLE

The most important kind you’ll have in your closet, solid-colour classic ties made from silk twill or silk satin are the neckwear of ‘tie mandatory’ dress codes. Interviews, social or professional evenings, or business meetings that require a formal turnout are those where plain-colour is your best call.

Your colour choice should be based on occasion: make your tie darkly respectful (black, navy, or dark grey) at a non-festive solemnity; you want to keep it softly-hued at a wedding (think silvers, greys, pastels, and light gold), and, to convey the idea of power, you’re looking for red (keep in mind the last may come across a little too obvious).

TYRWHITT TIP: A selection of solid-colour ties for each of these occasions will spare you the trouble of a last-minute purchase or the embarrassment of a faux pas. Your interviewer will notice if you turn up in your iridescent-pastel-pink best-man number...

PATTERNED TIES; FROM SUBDUED TO STATEMENT-MAKING

Patterned ties (printed or jacquard) are suitable for business or social occasions. Obligatory or not, they offer an appealing opportunity to add a personal touch to your look. Are you a paisley, polka-dot, stripes, animal print, geometric, foulard, or a micro-pattern kind of gentleman?

Depending on your pattern, fabric, or finish of choice, they can complement both formal and business casual looks. It’s also up to you to decide on how groovy you want to look and then tie it up accordingly. Stick with variations of your favourite pattern or keep your audience surprised with a varied selection, always making sure your ties are, ultimately, very you.

TEXTURED TIES: A TOP-DRAWER MODERN COMPLEMENT

Game-changing complements to formal and smart casual getups, textured ties may be crafted from wool, linen, cotton, and blends thereof, often worked to fabrics different from those of classic ties (knitted or grenadine, for example).

Even though these are hardly ground-breaking new ties (they’ve been around a while), they’re making a comeback as part of a modern way of dressing. They’ll go with your suit, yet they’re also ideal to complement business casual looks of unstructured tailoring, chinos, and even knitwear.

GRENADINE TIES

An 18th-century staple returns to the forefront of menswear on a smashing new take. Made from 100% silk woven by a special loom to an intricate textural jacquard, the grenadine tie transitions from one dress code to another with uncanny ease. Make one the finishing touch of formal attire or wear them with smart casual pieces, unstructured tailoring, knitwear, and casual(ish) trousers or jeans.
