Charles Tyrwhitt is very much a part of Nick Wheeler – in fact, they’re his middle names. Browse our website and he will pop up and tell you about his favourite products; pop into our stores and you’ll get his thoughts there too.
Born in Ludlow, Shropshire, Nick always had ambitions to run his own business. At school, he tried his hand at different ventures – photography (not for him); Christmas trees (too seasonal); and bespoke shoes (only ever fitted pixies and clowns). Nothing worked.
It was not until his second year at Bristol University that he found his calling. He was alarmed to see his fellow students so scruffy. “They needed a decent shirt,” he says; but he knew that to sell those shirts, they had to be better than anybody else’s – only at remarkably good value.
Whilst working not very hard for his geography degree, Nick spent most of his time scratching his head trying to work out how to sell shirts by mail. He spent £99 on 5000 leaflets and £199 on an Amstrad word processor, and Charles Tyrwhitt was born.
For 33 years, Nick has overseen the company and watched it grow little by little. We’ve expanded from just shirts and ties to suits, shoes, casualwear, and accessories; we’ve opened 45 stores worldwide; and grown from that single Bristol bedsit to now having 1,300 incredible people working for Charles Tyrwhitt around the world.
Nick’s goal has always been to make Charles Tyrwhitt the best shirt company in the world.
Outside of menswear, Nick is married to Chrissie Rucker, founder and owner of The White Company. They have four children and a menagerie of dogs, horses, sheep, and pigs.
He remains ever the menswear enthusiast – he once cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats in full pinstripe, brogues, and a beautiful Egyptian cotton poplin shirt. (That’s his story, anyway!) You’ll find Nick has something to say on just about everything Tyrwhitt, and like all of us, he cares deeply about his customers.
