The top ten items that should be in every gent’s winter wardrobe

As the cold tiptoes in, you’ll need to tackle it head-on. Here are my top ten classic items of menswear that will keep you warm and stylish for many winters to come.

1. A wool winter coat

Invest in quality and you’ll have a coat that will take you through many winters. Choose 100% wool which is not only smart, it will keep you snug as a bug in a rug. As you’ll be wearing it for work, opt for neutral or dark colours such as navy, black or camel which are considerably more professional than more idiosyncratic choices. I can’t recommend a good quality covert coat enough; it’s smart, classic and fits comfortably over my suit.

2. A tweed blazer

My tweed blazer is a godsend. I throw it on over anything from jeans to chinos and it instantly smartens up my ensemble. The tweed wool fabric is warm, durable and has a dash of the dandy about it. Choose one that fits well; ensure it doesn’t pull under the arms or across the chest and fits comfortably when you’re standing up and sitting down.

3. A wool suit

100% wool suit in navy or charcoal in a classic cut is smart, professional and warm. It’s also highly versatile and will look fantastic everywhere from the office to a winter wedding. Two-button single-breasted suit jackets are the universal standard, although heavier builds may find a three-button jacket more flattering (the neckline is cut less low, revealing less of the chest).

4. A cotton-cashmere shirt

For true shirt luxury come winter, wear a shirt made from a cotton and cashmere blend. I find it is breathable and cosy at the same time and, unlike most wools, hasn’t got that ‘scratchy’ feeling when laid next to the skin.

5. A black or navy cashmere sweater

Cosier than a cup of hot chocolate by the fireside, a good quality cashmere sweater looks as good as it feels. Choose one in a classic colour like black or navy, with a round neck or v-neck. Check the quality of the jumper by gently pulling the sides apart. If it bounces back into shape, you’re on to a winner.

6. A pair of corduroy trousers

Warmer than cotton chinos, a pair of cords will take you seamlessly from the office to the weekend. I always choose a pair made of 100% cotton with an eight wale cord because they are particularly durable. What’s more, the velvety soft finish will keep a gent toasty all winter long.

7. Merino wool knitwear

Merino wool is soft, light and breathable so it’s perfect for layering over other clothing in the colder months and won’t feel bulky under a jacket. I like to add a shirt underneath for the office, or a cotton t-shirt at the weekend.

8. A pair of boots

For tough, versatile footwear you can’t go far wrong with a pair of desert boots (they are very similar to chukka boots). Fear not, they have come a long way from the hard boots worn by the military during combat; now they are lightweight and comfortable, with a crepe sole to keep them extra comfortable and a suede finish to keep them extra smart. I wear mine with jeans or cords.

9. A cashmere scarf

It goes without saying that every gent needs a good quality cashmere scarf to help him combat those piercing winds. When you’re buying it, ensure you get good measure of its texture to make sure it feels luxuriously soft, without a hint of coarseness.

10. A pair of leather gloves

A smart pair of classic black leather gloves will look good with formal or casual wear. Choose a pair with a wool lining – cashmere is ideal – for the warmest and most comfortable feel.
