How to Measure for a Shirt

There’s nothing worse than an ill-fitting shirt. Too big and the loose fabric will flap about, too tight and you’ll be fidgeting all day. Find the perfect size and you’ll look smart and feel confident. Get the collar and sleeve length right and the rest will fall into place. Here’s how.

  • Collar

Measure around your neck with a clothing tape measure - ask someone to give you a hand for the most accurate result. Add half an inch to the result to ensure a comfortable collar fit.

  • Sleeve

Measure from the centre of the split yoke (the horizontal seam that runs down from the collar of all Charles Tyrwhitt formal shirts) to the elbow, running the tape measure along the outside of the shoulder. Then extend the tape measure from the elbow to where the sleeve should end (the ideal sleeve should end just after your suit sleeve). Always bend the elbow when measuring.
